Garrett Mentors, Inc

Currently we serve 100 children that range from kindergarten through the 5th grade who meet once a week with a Mentor during the students lunch time. Our goal is to teach the omportance of higher education and to experience outside activities that they would not normally have been offered to them. Part of our hour with the children always includes reading to them or having them read to us. Studies have shown that attendance, grades, attention in class, and overall attitude toward learning all improve because of mentoring programs. One of the goals of Garrett Mentors, Inc. is to expand into every elementary school in the county to help all children who need us.  Our volunteers currently mentor at the following elementary schools:
                                Accident
                                Broad Ford
                                Crellin
                                Dennett Road
                                Friendsville
                                Grantsville
                                Kitzmiller
                                Rt. 40
                                Yough Glades
                                Bloomington

Our Mentors are compassionate and dedicated volunteers that are friends, good listeners, and provide school support where needed. The Mentors work with the children of Garrett County and provide a missing piece in the child's life. Garrett Mentors, Inc "Inspire by Example" as they instill the importance of good grades and higher learning. They share their knowledge and experiences, teach skills needed to succeed in life, provide stability, instill values, build confidence and self-esteem, help the children discover his or her strengths, set goals and achieve dreams. The mentor and student share new experiences and develop a closer bond through planned activities during the year over and above their time spent together at school. These activities include introducing the children to the Arts. We anticipate taking the children to the Pittsburgh Symphony performances at Wisp Resort, to plays at Our Town Theater in Oakland, and to performances by Southern and Northern High Schools, Frostburg University and West Virginia University. We also would like these children to experience historical events in the area such as Flag Day on the Mountain, Gettysburg, and possibly trips to our Nations Capital to understand the heritage they have been given.
